“Parting Tides”
Design Brief:
Take a story from Italo Calvino's “Invisible Cities” that I resonated with and interpreted through intaglio printmaking
Execution:
I translate the story’s metaphors and dualities into a conceptual line drawing rather than simply illustrating it. After refining my design in my sketchbook, I transferred it onto a zinc plate and used hard-ground line etching to create the initial image. From there, I proofed the plate, developed tones and textures with techniques like aquatint and burnishing, and printed a final edition of six plus four variations using different papers and colors. Craftsmanship and registration were critical throughout the process.
